A statement from former First Lady Rosalynn Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ, leader of the Mental Health Task Force at Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ:
ATLANTA....I am pleased to see that the White House has released the final report from the President's . President Bush and Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson should be commended for their support of this effort and for making mental health a real priority for the Administration.
All of us working in the mental health community were glad to see another commission working on mental health established by the White House after nearly 25 years. I had the privilege and pleasure to meet with the commissioners over the course of their discussions and would like to commend them for their dedication and hard work. While there have been major advancements in our understanding of the brain and new treatments developed, our ability to provide quality care is still inadequate. I am especially concerned that in this time of declining financial resources many of the gains we have made will be lost.
I look forward to the time when recovery is the expected outcome of being diagnosed with a mental illness and all Americans will have access to early detection of these illnesses and the effective treatments and supports they need to live, work, learn, and participate fully in their communities.
